Birdlife: The red-winged starling

At Elaleni Coastal Forest Estate we love nature and birdlife, and pride ourselves on being home to a number of bird species. One such bird species is the red-winged starling, distinctively identified through its dark body with hints of chestnut colour on its wings.

The red-winged starling lives in a wide range of places, namely forest, grassland, and wetlands. These delightful birds are found within Elaleni’s forest areas, feeding on seeds, berries and nectars from plants such as aloes. You will never find a red-winged starling perched on a plant that can’t support its weight. The fruits this bird will eat are figs, making Elaleni a prized place for them to find food.

When nesting the red-winged starling can become aggressive, intolerant and attack humans or animals if they feel threatened. Otherwise, in other circumstances these birds are social and get along with other species.

Elaleni is full of natural splendour, attracting an array of nature, of which we will continue to share information about, so you know what you can expect to see and experience.
